CHAPTER SEVEN
Lorelei waited outside Domâs office while Ham related the information about the conflict he had seen between Bruce and Henry and the other members of their group. Sheâd told Ham that she would remain there while he was giving Dom every last detail of the incident he observed.
She didnât want to pass up the opportunity to hear what Dom might think about the argument between them. Already, it appeared that motive for Pearlâs murder existed among the gardening community. She wanted to hear firsthand if there was any chance the fight between the bingo players might stoke Domâs suspicions in another direction.
However, she didnât want him to think that she had her hands in everything that was happening. When she heard the door open, she expected it to be Ham and was surprised when Dom was the first one out.
âLorelei, I didnât expect to see you here.â
âIâm uhh, Iâm just moral support for Ham,â she said.
Dom stared at her for a moment, then gestured to Ham. âIt looks like he needs it.â
She glanced up for the first time, and her eyes went wide. Hamâs face had turned the color of a ripe tomato. Sweat beaded above his brow and rolled down his cheeks.
âAre you okay?â she asked.
âYou donât look so good, buddy,â Dom said. âWhy donât we get you to the infirmary?â
âI donât need to go to the nurseâs office,â Ham said, sounding a bit like a petulant fifth grader. âI just need some fresh air. Lorelei, will you take me to the rear deck?â
âOf course I will.â She wrapped her arm around his waist and led him away from the senior crew offices.
âThanks for getting me out of there,â Ham said when he had recovered a bit.
âBelieve me. I understand completely how being around Dom can leave you feeling a little hot under the collar.â
âLorelei,â Ham said as the color returned to his face. âYou and I are on completely different planets when it comes to our reaction to one Mr. Dominic Garcia. All of this has nothing to do with how he looks under that mop of silver and black hair.â He passed his hand in front of his face in a circular motion.
âOh.â
âSweetheart, thatâs your department. My sudden reaction has nothing to do with Dom.â
âWhatâs wrong, then?â
âDom shared something quite disturbing with me,â Ham whispered. âMy anxiety is unhinged at the moment. You just witnessed the effect.â
âIâm so sorry, Ham. I had no idea you suffered from high anxiety.â She rubbed the top of his shoulder to comfort him.
âI donât typically, but finding out that a passenger aboard this vessel was more than likely murdered really sets it off, it would seem.â
âWait a minute,â Lorelei said. âDom told you he believes, for sure, Pearl was murdered?â
âThatâs exactly what he said,â Ham answered.
âSomething must have changed. We just spoke, and he said he was unsure of what had actually happened.â
âIâm not sure if Iâm supposed to share this with anyone, but Dom just told me the initial examination of Pearlâs body revealed that her throat had swollen shut.
